You don’t have to show that exact amount in cash: valid credit cards and your bookings count too. In 2020 the two of us spent over 20 days in Italy (entering through Germany) with just over 900 euros in cash plus credit cards, and never had a problem.
410 tips de migración en Europa que te ahorrarán angustias10 European immigration tips that will save you stress
1. Lleva tus reservas impresasCarry printed copies of your bookings
They might ask for nothing, or for everything. In Germany they asked for all our bookings and the officer checked each one; he also asked how much money we were carrying.
2. Lleva efectivo y tarjeta de crédito por igualBring both cash and credit cards
Some things can’t be paid by card and others only by card. Immigration wants to know you can support your stay: calmly say you carry part in cash and part on cards. We know a couple who travelled with cash only and struggled to pay for hotels and even a flight. Don’t rely on a single payment method.
—¿Cuánto dinero traen? —980 euros y tarjetas de crédito. —¿Puedo ver? —Claro. (Y le mostramos el portadocumentos.)“How much money do you have?” “980 euros and credit cards.” “May I see?” “Of course.” (And we showed him our document holder.)
3. No te enredesKeep it simple
Keep everything in order in one folder, and if you travel with children, have their birth certificates and passports at hand. In Frankfurt we saw a family with kids, bags, jackets and a thousand papers having a hard time; in Madrid, my little niece and her parents were just greeted and stamped through.
4. A preguntas concretas, respuestas concretasShort questions, short answers
Contesta claro y sin extenderte: ¿A qué vienes? A turismo. ¿A qué te dedicas? Soy diseñadora, ingeniero, abogada…
Answer clearly and briefly: Purpose of your trip? Tourism. Which cities? Rome, then Naples, Florence and Pisa; our last night in Venice. What do you do? I’m a designer, engineer, lawyer…
5. Ten al menos inglés básicoHave at least basic English
If your flight enters through Germany or the Netherlands, they will speak to you in English. Remember you are the visitor: in some parts of Italy or France they won’t even switch to English.
6. Ten en cuenta tu tiempo de escalaMind your layover time
You clear immigration at the first Schengen airport you land in, not in Rome. If you connect in Madrid, Paris, Frankfurt or Amsterdam, allow at least 2 to 3 hours: immigration queues and terminal changes eat up time fast.
7. Prepárate para el registro biométrico (EES)Get ready for biometric registration (EES)
Since April 10, 2026 the Entry/Exit System (EES) is fully in place: the first time you enter Schengen they take your fingerprints and photo, and passports are no longer stamped. It’s free, but queues can be longer. More info at travel-europe.europa.eu.
8. Revisa el ETIAS antes de comprarCheck ETIAS before you book
Colombians don’t need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days, but the EU plans to start requiring the ETIAS travel authorisation (about 7 euros, valid for 3 years) around the end of 2026. Check whether it already applies on the official site: travel-europe.europa.eu/etias.
9. Pasaporte, tiquete de regreso y seguroPassport, return ticket and insurance
Your passport should be valid for at least 3 months after you leave Europe and have been issued within the last 10 years. Carry your return ticket and travel insurance with medical cover (the usual minimum is €30,000).
10. Respeta la regla 90/180Respect the 90/180 rule
You can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counting all Schengen countries together. With EES the count is automatic, so overstaying even one day gets recorded.
